Women's Golf In 22nd After First Round of NCAA Fall Preview

AUBURN, Wash. - The California women's golf team began the 2001 fall season with an opening round of 321 Monday at the NCAA Fall Preview at Washington National Golf Course. The Golden Bears are in 22nd place out of 24 teams with a round each still to be played Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tennessee sits atop the leader board with an opening round of 293, one shot ahead of Ohio State (294) and five shots ahead of USC (298). Rounding out the top five is Arizona State (299) and Auburn (300).

Senior Anne Walker paced the Bears with a first round score of 79, putting her in a tie for 69th. Junior Ria Quiazon is tied for 84th with an 80, followed by sophomore Sarah Huarte and junior Vikki Laing in a tie for 96th with an 81. Junior Amber Reilly is tied for 111th with an 83.

Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn and Tennessee's Young-A Yang lead the individual competition with a 70, one stroke ahead of three golfers.
