Casey Myers Named MVP Of Vancouver Canadians

Sept. 26, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Former Arizona State Sun Devil baseball player Casey Myers was honored as the team MVP of the Vancouver Canadians after his first year of professional baseball. Myers, who was a three-time All-American for the Sun Devils, was the ninth-round selection of the Oakland A's in this year's annual amateur draft. Myers hit .278 with 15 doubles and seven home runs and was named a Northwest League (Single-A) All-Star while the Canadians finished the season 37-39.

In addition to being named the Canadians' team MVP and receiving an engraved watch, Myers was also honored at the final home game with the Al Johnson Memorial Award, recognized as the most traditional baseball player on the 2001 squad.

Myers earned All-America status in three of his four years in the Maroon and Gold. In addition to his second-team All-America selection by Baseball America in 2001, Myers was a first-team The Sporting News All-American and a second-team pick by Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA and Baseball Weekly. He became only the third player in Pac-10 history to repeat as the conference Player of the Year and was also a finalist for Rotary Smith Player of the Year Award and the Johnny Bench Catcher of the Year.

Leading the Devils at the plate in 2001 with a .395 batting average and seven home runs, Myers put the finishing touches on a career that may go down as one of the best in ASU baseball history. Myers became only the third Sun Devil to reach 300 hits in a career and fell just nine short of the school record of 322. His 275 RBI rank second in school and Pac-10 history, just eight off the record set by former Sun Devil great Andrew Beinbrink (1996-99). Myers also ranks fifth with 815 career at-bats, seventh with 198 runs scored, fourth with 64 doubles, sixth with 39 home runs, third with 494 total bases and is seventh with his .384 career batting average.
