Women's Golf Finishes 21st At Rain-Shortened Fall Preview

Sept. 26, 2001

SEATTLE, Wash. - -

The Oregon State women's golf team finished 21st at the rain-shortened NCAA Fall Preview, firing a 623 over two rounds at the par-72, 6,283-yard Washington National Golf Club.

Rain forced cancellation of the Preview's third round on Wednesday morning, but teams were able to complete the remainder of the second round that was suspended Tuesday due to rain and standing water on the greens.

Of the 24 teams in the field, 20 were ranked among the Nation's top 25, and each of the top-10 competed.

'Given the field we were in, we had a good start (to the season),' 12th-year head coach Rise Lakowske said. 'It's nice to be 1-0 against the teams we beat.

'The players who played have done it before, so their experience helps. We're further along this year than we were at this time last year - we're much more experienced and more mature.'

The Beavers were forced to play with only four players in the second round when freshman Alexandra Lucio withdrew due to the flu. Lucio fired a first round 76 to lead the team on Monday.

OSU's Ashlei Pendleton cut seven shots off her first round score with a 73 in the second round to tie for 49th at 153.

Stacie Ferguson followed her opening round 77 with a 79 and tied for 73rd at 156, while Laura Skinner shot 161 to tie for 101st.

Marylyn Brand turned in a 77 on Tuesday and finished at 159, while Kelly Kerkvliet, playing as an individual, shot 173.

Auburn and Texas tied for the team championship at 591. Texas was a shot off the pace at 592.

Individually, Arizona's Lorena Ochoa pulled away with a second round 68 to win medalist honors at 5-under 139. Pepperdine's Katherine Hull took second at 142.

The rainout marked the third time in four years the women's NCAA Fall Preview has been unable to complete three rounds due to weather. The only Preview in that span to play all three rounds was held at Crosswater Resort in Sunriver, Ore.

Oregon State comes home for its next action, when it hosts the OSU/Shanico Invite Oct. 8-10 at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
