Women's Golf Ties for Sixth at NCAA Fall Preview

Sept. 26, 2001

AUBURN, Wash. - The Arizona State women's golf team finished in a tie for sixth place after rain canceled Wednesday's third round at the NCAA Fall Preview, held Sept. 24-26 at the Washington National Golf Club. The 54-hole event, which was hosted by the University of Washington, is the precursor to the 2002 NCAA Championships, which will be held at the par 72, 6,250-yard course May 21-24, 2002.

The seventh-ranked Sun Devils completed their second round before the course conditions became unplayable due to standing water on the greens, shooting a 15-over par 303 Tuesday for a two-day total of 602. The nine teams that did not finish on Tuesday completed their second rounds on Wednesday, but the tournament was called off on Wednesday afternoon due to water on the greens, and the 36-hole totals were made official.

Led by first-year head coach Mickey Yokoi, ASU finished in a tie for sixth with LSU at 26-over par, 11 strokes off the pace of Auburn and Texas, which tied for the tournament title at 15-over par 591. Tulsa (592), Ohio State (594) and Michigan State (601) rounded out the top five.

For the Sun Devils, junior Blair O'Neal finished in a tie for ninth place, her fourth career top-10 finish, firing a one-over 73 in each round for a two-day total of 147. Sophomore Jimin Kang (74-78) and junior Galle Truet (77-75) tied for 41st at 152, while senior Lisa Meredith finished in a tie for 54th with a two-round total of 154 (75-79). Freshman Josefin Gustafsson (79-77=156) tied for 73rd. Arizona's Lorena Ochoa captured medalist honors with a two-day total of five-under par 139.

The Sun Devils return to action Oct. 8-10 at the New Mexico State Invitational, being held at the University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
