Cal Volleyball Loses to No. 4 Ranked Stanford, 3-0

Sept. 28, 2001

BERKELEY, CA - The University of California women's volleyball team (3-5, 0-3) fell to No. 4 ranked Stanford (9-1, 3-0), 3-0 (30-27, 30-19, 30-20), Friday evening at Haas Pavilion. Even though the Bears were topped by the talented Cardinal in three games, they still played better than they had last weekend at Washington and Washington State when they were close in game one and then struggled in the next two games.

Junior Olympian Logan Tom led Stanford with 12 kills and freshman Ogonna Nnamani added 11 kills. Cal finished the match with only a .078 team hitting percentage, but played Stanford even in the first game before falling 30-27 when the Bears Reena Pardiwala ended game one with a service error. Cal was led by senior setter/outside hitter Candace McNamee's nine kills and sophomore Gabrielle Abernathy had eight kills. Sophomore Ashleigh Turner added a team-high 12 digs for the Bears.

Cal has not defeated Stanford since 1982, defeating the Cardinal, 3-1, Oct. 1, 1982 during the Cal Dolfin Invitational in Berkeley.

The Bears will next host Saint Mary's, Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. at Cal's Haas Pavilion.
