No. 6 Women's Soccer Blanks Fresno State, 2-0

Sept. 28, 2001

BERKELEY - No. 6 California made a triumphant return home after three weeks on the road with a 2-0 victory over Fresno State Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears' second shutout of the year improved their record to 7-1 overall, while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-4.

'I actually thought this was one of our better performances in the last few games,' said Cal coach Kevin Boyd. 'We kept the ball a lot better today. We generated more runs up top. There were a couple of offsides calls which took away chances, or we played it too late when we got in. When you look at the shots, 17 shots and only six on goal, that's telling right there. When we got in on goal, we just didn't hit our shots. We could have another day like that and have five or six goals. That happens sometimes.'

All-American junior forward Laura Schott accounted for both of the Cal goals. Schott posted her first goal in the 18th minute on a penalty kick, which was awarded when junior midfielder Brittany Kirk was fouled in the penalty box by defender Kristi Nichols.

Kirk and Schott hooked up in the run of play for the Bears' second goal in the 38th minute. Kirk passed Schott the ball from the left side, and a Bulldog defender misread the pass. Schott took a few dribbles around goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl and scored from about 10-yards out. The goal was Schott's eighth this season and fourth in the last two games.

Despite a scoreless second half, the Bears had numerous chances, particularly at the beginning and at the end of the half. Schott alone had at least three excellent scoring opportunities, including a breakaway opportunity in the 87th minute. Much of the play throughout the game was in the midfield.

Schott's scoring pace this season is almost on par with last year's. She has 18 points this season and had 19 through eight games last year.

The Bears held a 17-8 edge on shots, including a 12-5 advantage after the break.

Cal goalkeeper Mallory Moser only had to make two second-half saves to record her second collegiate shutout. Fresno State has only one goal in its last four games.

Cal continues its three-game homestand Monday against Hawaii at 3 p.m.
