Valpo Tops Men's Soccer 2-1
Freshman Chad Bartlome scored his first career goal for Oregon State on Friday afternoon, but it wasn't enough to hold off Valparaiso (4-3-0) as the Crusaders downed the Beavers (2-5-0) 2-1 in the OSU/Diadora Classic at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.
Bartlome took a corner kick from junior Alex Close at the far post and headed it to the back of the net to give the Beavers a brief 1-0 lead at the 40:01 mark.
After a questionable red card to defender and team co-captain Christian vanBlommestein, the Beaver defense was a step slower getting organized, which Valparaiso took advantage of to tie the game a minute later.
Valpo's Ben Olson squeezed off a shot from 30 yards out with no one in his face that sailed past OSU goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer, who was just inches from getting a hand on the shot and deflecting it wide.
Billmeyer, a sophomore co-captain, suffered a severe blow to the head in the second half when he charged a loose ball near the middle of the box. He was able to continue however, saving all six of his shots in the second stanza. Billmeyer now has 29 saves on the year.
'I thought the guys came out with a lot of energy,' OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. 'I felt they'd do battle, and they did. We had good opportunities early and we finished one of them, but I though the red card put us behind a bit. We didn't get as organized in the back (from that point on). The guys battled today, but we just lost our composure a bit and really didn't knock the ball around like we're capable of.'
The teams traded opportunities until midway through the second half when Valparaiso netted another shot.
Ken Kirleis sent a free kick toward the far post from 20 yards that deflected off the back of Valpo's Ben Olson and into the net for Olson's second goal of the day and a 2-1 lead.
The Beavers take on Cal State-Northridge on Sunday morning at 10:00, followed by Gonzaga and Valparaiso at 2 p.m.
'We need to regroup for Sunday and concentrate on the things we do well,' Taylor said. 'We need to work hard for each other.'
In the Classic's first game, CS-Northridge (5-1-0) downed Gonzaga (3-4-0) by a count of 1-0 on a goal by Charles Mitchell in the ninth minute.
