Soccer Wins Tournament With 3-1 Victory Over Furman; Four Sun Devils Earn All-Tournament Honors
Sept. 30, 2001
Tempe, Ariz. -- Balanced scoring from three freshmen players and a tough defense lifted the Arizona State soccer team (6-2) to a 3-1 win over Furman (6-3) today to capture the Traditional Bank Soccer Tournament title in Lexington, Kentucky. The Sun Devils doubled up Furman on shots, 18-9, while limiting them to only two shots in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Kristin Slater, one of four ASU players to garner all-tournament acclaim, went the distance in goal to lower her goals-against average to 0.80. Freshman forward Stephanie Peel, sophomore defender Amy LePeilbet and senior midfielder Stacey Tullock also joined Slater on the team.
Early on ASU fell behind 1-0 when Furman's Danielle Petro scored from 25-yards out in the 18th minute. The Sun Devils came back to tie the match in the 30th minute, picking up where they left off against Kentucky. After earning another corner kick, Peel kicked the ball towards the goal where fellow freshman Tamara Zuffi headed it in for her first career goal.
In the 68th minute, freshman Andrea Waite tallied her second career goal and game-winner after picking the ball up in a flurry in front of the goal and putting it pass the Furman goalkeeper. Junior Lindsey Mack and sophomore Patrice Feulner were each credited with an assist.
The Sun Devils scored an insurance goal in the 86th minute when Tullock made a long throw-in to Peel, who shot the ball into the net for her second goal of the tournament.
'This was a great tournament for us to win against two tournament tested teams,' said head coach Ray Leone. 'The team took a big step forward in the program this weekend.'
Up next, Arizona State will host Northern Arizona at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium on Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m.
