Women's Soccer Records 3-0 Win At Loyola Marymount
Sept. 30, 2001
LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore midfielder Megan Abbamonto's goal at 55:19 started the scoring Sunday as the USC Trojans registered a 3-0 win at Loyola Marymount in a non-conference match. Ali Fennell and Shannon Cross also scored in the second half for the Trojans (4-3-1).
Senior goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes made five saves for her third shutout of the season and ninth in her career, tying her for second on USC's all-time list with Karin Puccinelli.
USC held a 19-8 advantage in shots and dominated play after Loyola Marymount (3-5) controlled the tempo in the first five minutes of the second half.
'I thought we did a better job of finishing our chances in the second half,' said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. 'I knew things would open up with the effort everyone on the team gave...all we needed was that first break.'
Abbamonto scored off a corner kick by Cross for the Trojans' first goal. While the ball was in front, Abbamonto knocked the ball in with her left foot while on the ground. Fennell knocked in the second goal of the match at 60:08 off a throw-in and a touch pass from freshman Kelly Blais.
Cross finished the scoring on a breakaway off a pass from junior Jackie Fodor.
The Trojans complete a span of playing five games in 11 days and will not play again until next Sunday (Oct. 7) when they travel to San Diego State for a 1 p.m. match. It will be the final non-conference match of the season for the Trojans before the start of Pac-10 Conference play.
