Golfers Finish Fifth at Husky Invitational

Oct. 2, 2001

BREMERTON, Wash. - The University of Oregon men's golf team rallied in Tuesday's final round to finish fifth at the Husky Invitational, played at the 7,035-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at Gold Mountain.

The Ducks shot a 375 Tuesday, the fourth-lowest round of the day, and finished at 1,122. Oregon entered the final round in seventh, but climbed over Oregon State, which finished ninth at 1,130, and Colorado to finish in the top half of the field. Washington won the tournament at 1,099, followed by Washington State at 1,106, Nevada at 1,109 and defending champion Pepperdine at 1,113.

'We did not have a very good tournament,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. 'We saved a little face by passing a few people today, but overall, I'm not happy with how we played.'

Defending individual champion John Ellis of Oregon had a 1-over par 73 Tuesday, but still held on for fourth, finishing at even-par for the tournament. Senior Aaron Byers had the low round of the day for the Ducks with a 1-under 71 and tied for fifth overall at 1-over.

'John and I played pretty well, but it's a bad feeling because we're in it for the team,' said Byers. 'As a team, we were never able to put five scores together. I think we got caught off guard a little bit by the golf course. It's very difficult and the greens are tough. But that's not an excuse. We know that we can put some good scores together, we just didn't do it this week.'

Gordy Schutt of Washington won the individual title, shooting a 2-under 70 Tuesday. He finished the tournament at 5-under 211, two strokes better than Nevada's Sprague Kolp, who tied the course record with a final round 67, and California's Peter Tomasulo.

Oregon returns to action Monday at the Pepperdine Intercollegiate in Oxnard, Calif.
