Kim Welch Captures Lady Vandal Fall Golf Invitational Title
Oct. 2, 2001
MOSCOW, Idaho - Washington State University freshman Kim Welch fired a final round 69 to capture the Lady Vandal Fall Invitational by two strokes at the par-72 University of Idaho Golf Course, Tuesday.
Welch entered the final round in a tie for ninth, trailing second round leader Walakak Satarak of UC Irvine by five strokes. The Sacramento, Calif., native overcame the deficit with her tournament-best final round effort. Welch shot rounds of 79-73-69 for a five-over par total of 221, two ahead of Idaho's Nicole Keller.
'I thought I had a chance to come back,' Welch said. 'I figured I would need to shoot a 66 to win. I didn't get that so I was a little nervous waiting for the other scores to come in.
'Putting was definitely the difference,' added Welch. 'I was hitting the ball well all week but I had five three-putts in the first round. I fixed it in the second round and I made a couple of putts during the final round.'
Welch helped lead the Cougars to a fourth place team finish in the 16-team field. With a final round cumulative score of 303, WSU was only topped by tournament champion Idaho's 302 for the best final round team score of the day.
Senior Tasha Browner finished in a tie for fourth with a score of 225 (+9). It was the second top four finish in the fall season for the Tarzana, Calif., native. Browner posted a third place effort at the Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., Sept. 11.
