Oregon State Men's Golf Ninth At Husky Invite

Oct. 2, 2001

Oregon State sophomore Daren Greig fired a 4-over-par 220 to finish ninth at the Husky Invitational, but it wasn't enough to lift the Beavers past ninth.

After firing a tournament-best 357 in Monday's second round, the Beavers turned in a 387 on Tuesday to bring their total to 1,130 for the three rounds at the par-72, 7,035-yard Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex.

Six players competed from each team, with the low five scores counting toward the team total, thus the higher scores than in most tournaments, which play five and count four.

Greig wrapped up his performance with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday, giving him his second top-10 finish in three tournaments this fall. The Canby, Ore., native tied for eighth at the Northwest Collegiate in September.

Other than a 72 by David Yarnes, who tied for 28th at 226, the Beavers couldn't get an individual score lower than 79 on Tuesday.

'This was one of the best courses we'll play this year,' OSU coach Brian Watts said of the young, tree-lined Olympic Course. 'I think they went in feeling good and a couple of them got off to good starts, but this course will get you. If you put it in the wrong spots on these greens they'll make you pay.

'We took too many high numbers today and didn't manage the ball around the course well. We put it where we couldn't afford to and paid for it. On top of not managing the ball well, we didn't putt well.'

Michael Jurgensen finished at 227 to tie for 31st, while Chance Holmes tied for 42nd at 231.

Todd Deacon tied for 46th and his brother Sean tied for 53rd.

Washington won the tournament with a score of 1,099, edging out Northwest rival Washington State by seven strokes

Gordy Scutt gave the Huskies the double win with his individual medalist effort. Scutt turned in a 5-under 211 to win by three strokes.

Oregon State will wrap up its fall season at the Pepperdine Intercollegiate on Oct. 8-9.
