Men's Golfers Compete at Carpet Capital Invitational

Oct. 3, 2001

The unranked UCLA men's golf team looks to climb into the national rankings this week when it travels to Georgia to compete against a national field in the Carpet Capital Invitational at The Farm.

The tournament runs Oct. 4-6 and will be hosted by Georgia Tech.

Head Coach Brad Sherfy, entering his seventh season, believes the Bruins are ready to contend and surprise a few teams.

'Top to bottom, this is the most competitive team I've had at UCLA,' said Sherfy, who last season guided the Bruins to their third NCAA appearance in six years. 'All our players improved over the summer, and our incoming players will make an impact.'

Sophomore John Merrick enjoyed an outstanding summer, winning the Southern California Amateur championship and the Long Beach City Men's Championship. He also qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship for the second straight year and played in the U.S. Publinks Championship.

'Right now, John is playing head and shoulders above anyone on the team,' said Sherfy. 'He is a legitimate All-America candidate.'

Also returning for the Bruins are senior Parker McLachlin and sophomore Steve Conway.

McLachlin also won twice during the summer, capturing the Sports Shinko Rainbow Open and the Oahu Country Club Men's Invitational Championship in his home state of Hawaii. In the latter competition, he fired a final round 64 to win by five shots.

Conway, who appeared in 12 events and recorded two top 10 finishes as a freshman last season, placed 13th at the Southern California Amateur and competed in the U.S. Amateur.

Two other lettermen, junior Sang-Eun Ji and sophomore Roy Moon improved their games over the summer and will battle for spots on the travel team all season.

Sherfy also welcomes three promising newcomers: 21-year old sophomore Doug Batty from New Zealand, and freshmen Breene Murphy of Los Alamitos and John Poucher of Santa Barbara.
