16th-Ranked Huskies Edge Montana in Women's Soccer
Oct. 5, 2001
MISSOULA, Mont. - Senior Caroline Putz converted a penalty kick within five minutes after entering the game Friday, lifting 16th-ranked Washington to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over Montana at UM South Campus Field.
The win snapped a three-game winless streak for the Huskies (5-2-1) whose last victory came on Sept. 9. Montana (3-4) was seeking to avenge a 5-0 loss to Washington last season in Seattle during the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Putz, who started all seven previous games, entered the game as a substitute in the 38th minute of the first half. She was called upon to take a penalty kick at 42:37 when a Montana defender was called for a hand ball after a scramble near the Grizzly goalmouth.
Eighth-year Montana coach Betsy Duerksen received a red card and was ejected after arguing the hand-ball call. Duerksen served as the head coach at Seattle University from 1991-93.
Washington had not scored a goal since a 1-1 tie with Brigham Young on Sept. 21. The score by Putz snapped a string of 267 scoreless minutes for the Huskies.
The goal was the seventh game-winner for Putz, moving her into a tie for second among Husky career leaders. Tara Bilanski holds the school record with 12 career game-winning goals. Putz moved into the No. 5 spot among all-time UW goal scorers with her 19th career tally.
Junior Hope Solo made three saves for Washington en route to her second, and the team's fourth, shutout. Katie Peck had six saves for Montana which was outshot 19-9 by the Huskies.
The Grizzlies played physically, racking up 17 fouls to just four for Washington. Two Montana players received yellow cards in the first half and Brianna Hitchcock earned a red card in the 62nd minute that forced the Grizzles to compete with 10 players during the final 28 minutes.
The Huskies closes out their non-conference schedule on Sunday at Eastern Washington. They begin defense of their Pacific-10 Conference championship at home on Oct. 13 against Washington State.
