Men's Soccer Wins in OT

Oct. 5, 2001

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior Zach Kingsley scored in the 103rd minute to lift the No. 7 Washington men's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium Friday night.

The Huskies, who played their second overtime game of the season, improve to 7-1-0. Santa Clara drops to 4-5-0.

It was a defensive battle all night, with just 19 total shots between the two teams. Senior co-captain Ben Somoza led the Huskies with four chances, while Kingsley finally capitalized on his third shot of the game. It was defender Billy Sleeth who sent the ball from the corner across the goal box to Kingsley, who was right in front of the net and headed the ball in over the Bronco goalkeeper's head for the score.

Junior keeper Chad Olsen went the distance in goal for the Huskies, making three stops in the game while Santa Clara's Steve Cronin tallied six saves.

Washington returns home for a pair of games next weekend. The Huskies host St. Mary's of California at 7 p.m., Oct. 12 and then open defense of their Pac-10 Conference championship with a 7 p.m. game against Oregon State Oct. 13. The OSU game is a doubleheader with the Washington women's soccer team which hosts Washington State at 5 p.m. that day.
