No. 6 Women's Soccer Falls to No. 21 Saint Mary's 1-0 in OT

Oct. 5, 2001

BERKELEY - Forward Jennifer Barbera scored a goal in the second minute of overtime to lift No. 21 Saint Mary's to a 1-0 road victory over No. 6 California Friday at Edwards Stadium. The Gaels improve to 9-0-1 as they snapped the Golden Bears (8-2) 16-game regular season home winning streak and their five-game overall winning streak.

California had several golden opportunities to win the game in regulation. The first came in the 70th minute when All-American forward Laura Schott's penalty kick was saved by Saint Mary's goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery. Schott drew the penalty kick when Montgomery fouled her on a break away, but no card was issued.

In the 75th minute, Cal midfielder Brittany Kirk got behind the defense on a pass from forward Kacy Hornor. Kirk's shot rolled just left of the goal.

Later, Cal midfielder Kim Yokers had a one-v-one opportunity about 12-yards out, and Montgomery came up with another big save.

'We should have put it away in the second half,' said Cal coach Kevin Boyd. 'We missed a PK and three one-on-ones. You can't expect that in every close game to get that many chances. We have to score one of those. Then, our mentality going into the overtime, we've been slow starting for awhile now. To give up a shot that nicks the post and goes in, you just can't give up anything like that in an overtime. You win the ball and go forward. That's the way it works.'

In the 92nd minute, forward Lucianne Crenshaw fed Barbera on the right side of the field. Barbera then lofted a shot toward the far post which looked as if it might go wide, but it caught the lower corner of the post and bounced into the goal for the game winner.

The game was even in most of the statistical categories. The shots were tied at 10-10 as the Gaels held a 6-1 edge in the first half, and the Bears controlled the run of play and had a 9-3 shot advantage after halftime. Montgomery made five saves, while Cal keeper Mallory Moser had four saves.

Cal looks to rebound from today's loss Sunday on the road at San Francisco. Kick-off is at 1 p.m., at Negoesco Stadium.
