UCLA Places Second in Women's and Men's Team Scoring at the ASU Cross Country Invitational

UCLA's women's 'B' team and the Bruin men's varsity, without its toptwo runners, both placed second on Friday at the Arizona State CrossCountry Invitational, held at Freestone Park in Gilbert, AZ.

In the women's team scoring (Top 5 of 11 teams), Stanford won with 19points, followed by UCLA 'B' (81), CS Northridge (82), Arizona State (83)and Central Arizona College (114). The individual winner was Stanford'sLaura Turner, covering the 5000m course in 18:04.00.

The Bruin women had four runners in the Top 20. Leading the pack wasfreshman Carolyn Shea, placing seventh, in a time of 18:53.00. She wasfollowed by junior Julia Barbour (14th, 19:22.00), junior Kelly Grimes(15th, 19:31.00) and sophomore Tiffany Burgess (19th, 19:42.00). UCLA'sfifth runner was freshman Christine Atkins, who placed 29th (20:20.00).

In men's competition, the team winner was New Mexico, with 31 points,followed by (Top 5 of 10 teams), UCLA (56), Central Arizona College (77),Dine CC (121) and Pima CC (158). The Bruin men did not run their toprunners ' senior Bryan Green, who is sidelined with a respiratory infectionand sophomore Jon Rankin, out the remainder of the season with a stressfracture.

The men's winner over the 8000m course was New Mexico's Matt Gonzales,in a time of 25:32.3.

The Bruin men had four runners finish in the Top 20. UCLA's firstrunner was freshman Ben Aragon, placing fourth in 26:04.9. Also in the Top20 were freshman Robert Kubler (11th, 26:37.5), freshman Seth Neumuller(14th, 26:51.2) and freshman Puneet Mahan (18th, 27:07.6).

Looking ahead, the Bruin women, ranked No. 18 in the U. S. and theUCLA men's varsity will run on Oct. 13 at the NCAA Preview Meet inGreenville, SC and hosted by Furman. It's the same course that will hostthe upcoming 2001 NCAA Championships, on Nov. 19.
