Women's Tennis competes in Rivera All-American tennis prequalifiers

The prequalifying tournament of the Riviera Women's All-American Tennis Championships opened play today at UCLA, with five Cal players taking part in the competition.

The 64-player singles and 32-team doubles prequalifying draws will be trimmed down to eight players and four teams tomorrow. Those players will advance to the Oct. 9-10 qualifying tournament, which precedes the Oct. 11-14 main draw.

Four Cal women advanced into the second round of the pre-qualifying matches in the singles events. Catherine Lynch defeated Josien Boverhof of Southern Alabama in three sets to advance to the qualifying round, as Carla Arguelles and Jieun Jacobs were defeated in their matches. At press time, Sekita Grant was fighting a battle in the third set with Susie Abromeit of Duke.

Two doubles teams will also take part in the second round, scheduled for play tomorrow. The Fusano-Nicole Havlicek duo advanced by virtue of a bye, and the team of Sekita Grant and Jieun Jacobs defeated their military opponent to advance.

The first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national and singles and doubles championships of the 2001-02, the Riviera Women's All-American Championships are one of three national collegiate tennis championships of the season. The Riviera Women's All-American Championships (its counterpart, the ITA Men's All-American Championships, are taking place in Stone Mountain, Ga., this week), the Nov. 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events during the season.

The tournament can be followed on the ITA's official website, www.itatennis.com, and complete results can be found there. Contact Casey Angle at the ITA for more information.
