Men's Soccer Edges Santa Clara, 1-0, in OT
Oct. 7, 2001
BERKELEY - For many of the 527 spectators that stayed through the entire 104 minutes of play, hanging around to witness the end result was time well spent. Freshman Mike Munoz kicked in a looping shot over the head of Santa Clara keeper Rusty Johnson at 103:42 after collecting Troy Roberts' throw-in to give California (6-3-1) its fourth shutout of the season, 1-0, over the Broncos (4-6-0).
After participating in much of regulation play, Munoz did not start the overtime period and came in after 13 minutes had ticked off the clock in the extra session. It took the freshman midfielder all of 16 seconds to find his comfort zone and kick in the game-winner.
'Coach put a lot of faith in me today (putting me in late),' said an elated Munoz. 'Its great to contribute to this great program.'
For the match, Santa Clara outshot the Bears 14-7 as the Broncos put seven on goal. Out of the seven shots taken by Cal, five were directed towards the net.
Both teams had many opportunities to end the game in regulation. Senior Chris Roner's blast from 20 yards outside the box just nearly missed the goal mouth at the 22nd mark of the game.
Sunday's win extended the Bears' unbeaten streak to six games and avenged a 5-0 romp at the hands of Santa Clara last season.
'The returning players told us about last year's loss and we couldn't believe that that had happened,' said Munoz. 'The upperclassmen wanted it badly. We wanted it badly.'
'Our defense was rock solid and our possession play was great,' said coach Kevin Grimes. 'Santa Clara is a great team and to take them to overtime and beat them, it was a sweet victory, that's for sure.'
Cal opens up Pac-10 play as it travels down state to battle UCLA Friday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m.
