Kang, Sun Devils lead the New Mexico State Intercollegiate After the First Round

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Led by sophomore Jimin Kang, the seventh-ranked Arizona State women's golf team shot an five-under par 283 Monday to lead the field after the first round of the Price's 'Give 'em Five' New Mexico State Intercollegiate, being held Mon.-Wed., Oct. 8-10 at the par 72, 6,119-yard University Golf Course.
ASU leads the field by eight strokes over second-place Baylor (291) after turning in a tournament-high 15 birdies in the first round. New Mexico State (295), Oklahoma (296) and UCLA (299) round out the top five. The Sun Devils' five-under 283 is the lowest round for the team since posting the same score in the second round of the Arizona Invitational in February of 2000.
Individually, Kang leads the tournament after carding a season-low, five-under par 67 on Monday. A second-team All-Pac-10 selection last year, Kang holds a two-stroke lead over UTEP's Leslie Hawley and Baylor's Nicole Johnson who each turned in three-under 69s on Monday.
In addition to Kang, four other Sun Devils are in the top 20 after the first round, including junior Gaï¿½lle Truet who is tied for fourth at one-under 71. Senior Lisa Meredith shot an even 72 and is tied for seventh, while freshman Josefin Gustafsson is tied for 11th after firing a one-over 73 on Monday. Freshman Erin Tone, who is playing in the tournament as an individual, shot a 74 and is tied for 15th, while junior Blair O'Neal stands in a tie for 27th after carding a four-over 76 in the first round.
Second-round play at the NMSU Intercollegiate begins at 6:30 a.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday from tees No. 1 and 10, while Wednesday's final round will be a shotgun start at 7 a.m.
