Pullman, Wash. - The Washington volleyball team dropped its third straight match, falling to Washington State in three games, 30-28, 30-10, 30-25, Monday evening at Bohler Gym. With the loss, the Huskies fell to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in the Pac-10, while Washington State improved to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Senior Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) and junior Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) led the Huskies with seven kills a piece, while junior setter Gretchen Maurer recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs.
The two sides started the match by tying five times, before Washington State broke an 8-8 tie on three straight UW hitting errors, to take the 11-8 lead. The Cougars stayed ahead for most of the game, until the Huskies rallied back to tie the score at 23-23, with the spark off the bench from sophomore Kara Bjorklund (Olympia, Wash.). Both schools then traded leads, as the score was tied at 24, 25, 26 and 27, before a Richardson hitting error gave WSU a 27-28 lead. A kill from Cougar Zandra Bautre then gave her team match point at 27-29, which the Huskies fended off with a Underhill kill to get back to within one at 28-29. Bautre, however, matched Underhill on the next play to give WSU a 30-28 win.
The Cougars continued their momentum into game two, taking a 3-0 lead and then advancing it to a five-point advantage at 9-4, to force a Washington timeout. WSU added one more point before the Huskies rallied to get to within four with at 7-11. The Cougars then took control of the game, posting a 10-point scoring run in the middle, as the Huskies hit -0.85 as a team before falling 10-30.
Both sides went back to battling in the early part of the third game as the Huskies lost to lead at 3-4, but stayed within striking distance, tying the game at 10-10. Washington State then outscored the UW 11-5, taking the second of two, six-point advantages with the second at 15-21. Washington rallied to get back to within two at 20-22, but coming out of a timeout, the Cougars rebuilt their lead, taking the game and the match with a 30-25 win.
