Oct. 8, 2001

Seattle - The Washington women's basketball team, NCAA regional finalists last year, have been tabbed at No. 12 in the first preseason poll released by The Women's Basketball Journal.

The magazine's editors selected perennial power Connecticut to win its third national championship and also placed two teams from the SEC and the Big 12 in the Top 5 of the publication's preseason rankings. From the Pac-10, Stanford checked in at No. 9 and Arizona State at No. 17.

Washington returns three starters and eight letterwinners from the team that won a share of 2001 Pac-10 championship and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. In addition, a trio of standout players all from the state of Washington, makeup the Husky freshman class this season.

Washington plays a pair of exhibition games, on Nov. 4 and 12, before opening defense of its Pac-10 title Nov. 16 at Montana State.
