Women's Tennis Competes in Riviera Pre-Qualifying Tournament

Los Angeles - Three UCLA women's tennis players competed in the pre-qualifying tournament for the Riviera All-American Championships this past weekend at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

Eighth-seeded Petya Marinova, Mariko Fritz-Krockow and freshman Sarah Gregg were among the 64 singels players vying for a spot in next week's qualifying draw.

Both Marinova and Fritz-Krockow fell in the third round of singles on Sunday, the final round of pre-qualifying.

Marinova defeated Michelle Krinke of Texas in the first round and Gretchen Haynor of Purdue in the second round. Both of those wins were in straight sets. She was beaten in the third round by Northwestern's Jessica Rush, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Fritz-Krockow defeated Texas A&M's Roberta Spencer and Nebraska's Amy Frisch, before falling to Alice Pirsu of Penn, 6-1, 7-5.

Gregg fell in the first round to second-seeded Lindsay Blau of Texas, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

In doubles, Fritz-Krockow and Gregg received a first-round bye before falling to Nebraska's Balan/Frisch, 9-7 in the second round.

Catherine Hawley and Lauren Fisher will be competing in the singles qualifying draw beginning Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club. Sara Walker and Megan Bradley are already in the main draw which begins Thursday.
