Arizona Fall Ball - Day Four
Oct. 12, 2001
On Day Four, They Played Six: The Arizona baseball team played its third intrasquad game of the fall on Friday, a six inning affair that went in favor of the gray team, 8-5. Six defensive miscues and 16 hits led to three lead changes and 13 runs. The gray team opened the scoring in second with three runs, two of which were unearned, off of white starter Scott Burns. After retiring the first two hitters in the inning on two pitches, Burns surrendered a single to left by Justyn St. Clair. Running on the pitch, St. Clair scored from first on Greg Powers' double to left. A walk to Rich Mercado and a single by Pat Reilly loaded the bases. Burns attempted a pickoff at second, but with nobody covering the base, the right-hander had no where to throw the ball except straight down. The errant pickoff allowed Powers to score from third and Mercado from second as Brad Hassey's throw eluded the catcher. Down, but not out, the white team scored five runs in the third off of freshman Will Miller. Hassey led off the inning with his first hit of fall ball, a single up the middle, and promptly stole second. A walk to Marc Kaiser placed runners on second and third for Moises Duran who singled home Hassey for the first run of the inning and moved Kaiser to third. Ken Riley brought Kaiser home on a ground ball that was misplayed by John Hardy for an error. Freshman Chris Marini plated Duran and Riley with a double to left. Classmate Jeff Van Houten hit a ground ball up the middle that was fielded by Powers at second, but an errant throw allowed Marini to score the final run of the inning. The gray team closed the gap to a single run in the fourth when Clayton Bried, who had singled and stolen second and third, scored on a pickoff play at first. They then went ahead for good in the top of the sixth with four runs, only one of which was earned, off of reliever Ken Riley. Riley making his first appearance on the mound ever, surrendered only two hits, but two errors and a two-out RBI double by Chris Cunningham doomed the white team in the end. Four players on the gray team finished with two hits on the day, including St. Clair who also scored twice and Bried who scored once and stole two bases.

Quoting Coach: 'Today was good. We made positive mistakes, which means they were aggressive mistakes. We're making mistakes by commission rather than by omission. There are some wrinkles that need to be worked out, but we're getting better.'
