Gold Downs Cardinal In Swimming, Diving Intrasquad Meet

Oct. 12, 2001

In an exhibition intrasquad meet to kick off the swimming and diving season, Team Gold defeated Team Cardinal, 214-197, on Friday afternoon at McDonald's Swim Stadium. Because it was an exhibition no times are posted.

The meet, contested hotly from start to finish, came down to the last relay after the Team Gold's women's 400y free relay was disqualified. But Team Gold's men team rallied to take their 400 relay, earning the win despite the 10 points Cardinal earned for the Spirit Award.

Junior Erik Vendt of the Cardinal was the only triple-winner of the day, touching first in the 1000y freestyle, 200y backstroke and 200y breaststroke. Gold teammates Rodrigo Castro (100y and 200y free) and freshman Kaitlin Sandeno (200y free, 200y breast) both won twice.

Other Gold winners were, junior Jennifer Parmenter in the 50y free, sophomore Jana Krohn in the 200y buttefly, senior Katie Meyer in the 200y backstroke, sophomore Melissa Deary in the 500y free, freshman Mike Stoller in the 50y free, senior Tamas Kererkjarto in the 200y IM and junior Jeff Lee in the 200y fly.

Other Cardinal winners were junior Michala Kwasny in the 200y IM, junior Asa Sandlund in the 1000y free, senior Kristin MacGregor in the 100y free and sophomore Klete Keller in the 500y free.
