Men's Swimming Victorious Over Pacific, 122-75

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's swimming (1-0) opened its season with a 122-75 victory over the University of Pacific (0-1) tonight at the Avery Aquatic Center. The women's team also captured a win over the Tigers, 143-117. The Stanford men competed in eight events and captured first place in each race. In three additional races, the Cardinal had no official entrants.
The Cardinal captured first, second and third places in the 400 medley relay to open the meet and never trailed. Stanford claimed the top three spots in the 1000 free, 50 free, 200 individual medley and 200 back. The Cardinal also defended its home turf by taking the top two spots in the 200 free, 200 fly and 100 free to secure the victory.
Junior Randall Bal (Fair Oaks, CA/Bella Vista), a gold medalist at the 2001 World Championships in the 50m free, captured his first win of the season in the 100 free. Sophomore Peter Marshall (Atlanta, GA/Marist), who took gold in the 2001 World University Games in the 50m and 100m back, captured the victory in the 200 free. Sophomore Bobby O'Bryan (Ft. Smith, AR/Southside) anchored the first-place 400 medley relay team and claimed first in the 50 free. Stanford swimmers also finished with first place times in the 500 free, 200 breast and 400 free relay, but were swimming unofficially as Stanford had already clinched the meet.
Stanford will host its annual Alumni meet on Sat., Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. The Cardinal resume competition at the UOP Invitational in Stockton, Calif. on Fri., Oct. 19 and Sat., Oct. 20.
