Volleyball Ends Losing Streak With Four-Game Win Over Arizona State

SEATTLE - The Washington volleyball team broke a three-match losing streak by defeating Arizona State for the first time since 1998, winning in four games, 36-38, 30-28, 32-30, 30-22, Friday at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz. With the win, the Huskies moved to 9-7 overall and 3-5 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils fell to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
The Huskies were led by freshman outside hitter Vanessa Gilliam (Fairfield, Calif.), who had a career-best 21 kills to go along with 10 digs for her first career double-double. Four other Washington players reached double-figures in kills, including senior Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.), who had 17 kills. Richardson also led the Huskies on defense with a career-high 20 digs, while senior Britni Churnside (Eugene, Ore.) and freshman Kaitlin Leck (Carson City, Nev.) each tallied 15 digs apiece.
After being edged in the first game 36-38, Washington rallied to win the second and third by two points each, 30-28 and 32-30. The UW then outhit the Sun Devils, .217 to .070 in the fourth game to take the match with a 30-22 victory.
Arizona State's Julia Leddy had a match-high 23 kills in the loss for the Sun Devils. Washington continues its trip through Arizona with another Pac-10 Conference match at 7 p.m. against No. 7 Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.
