Washington senior Sabrina Monro today captured her fourth-consecutive individual title to lead the 16th-ranked Husky women's cross-country squad to a fifth-place finish in the 6,000-meter Women's Silver race at the NCAA Pre-Meet in Greenville, S.C. The Husky men also impressed, finishing eighth in the 8,000-meter Men's Gold race on the strength of senior Jason Fayant's 15th-place run.

Monro, undefeated in 2001 since transferring from Montana, charged to an early lead, but had to come back over the last half-mile to win the Women's Silver race, doing so in 20:26, five seconds ahead of Boston College's Catherine Guiney. Freshman Lisa Gibbs also continued her stellar first season, placing 10th in 21:09. Monro's time bettered that of Women's Purple race winner Molly Austin of top-ranked Colorado by 22 seconds.

The women's field, split into two evenly-distributed races, featured 21 of the top 25 teams in this week's FinishLynx Women's Cross-Country Rankings, and was held on the same Furman University course which will host the 2001 NCAA Championships in November. Washington finished fifth in its race with 231 points, with Stanford edging BYU 72-74. In unofficial combined scoring of the two races, the Huskies placed ninth.

The Husky men also staged an impressive performance, surging to eighth in the Men's Gold race. Fayant, a Spokane native, placed 15th in 25:02, roughly a minute behind race champion David Kimani of Alabama, who finished in 24:06. Eastern Michigan's Boaz Cheboiywo took the Men's Black race and overall titles, finishing in a scintillating 23:31.
