Women's Cross Country Finishes Third, Men Ninth at NCAA Pre-National Invitational Saturday

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Arizona State's fourth-ranked women's cross country team finished third in the Women's Purple race, while the 15th-ranked ASU men finished ninth in the Men's Gold competition at the Furman Invitational/NCAA Pre-National Invitational, hosted by Furman University in Greenville, S.C., Saturday.

In a preview of the next month's NCAA Championships, ASU senior Lisa Aguilera finished third (21:05) and senior Kelly MacDonald finished seventh (21:29) on the 6,000m course, leading the Sun Devil women who placed ahead of No. 1 Colorado. Also scoring for ASU were senior Brianna Torres (30th), junior Cody Sohn (35th) and freshman Desiree Davila (65th).

With so many teams entered in the competition, two Pre-NCAA races were held for both men and women. In the Women's Purple race, No. 11 Georgetown took first with 48 points, followed by No. 13 Michigan State (118) and No. 4 ASU (137). Top-ranked Colorado, led by first-place finisher Molly Austin, placed fourth with 165 points.

On the men's side, ASU's ninth-place team finish in the 8,000m Gold race was bolstered by junior Fasil Bizuneh, placing fifth (24:25). Also scoring for ASU were sophomore Juan Reyes (21st), junior Ronnie Buchanan (41st), freshman JJ Duke (77th) and senior J.R. Cox (87th). Top-ranked Colorado won the Men's Gold title with 62 points, followed by No. 5 Notre Dame (172) and unranked Air Force (184). Eastern Michigan's Boaz Cheboiywo won the individual crown in 23:31.

In the Women's Silver race, No. 2 Stanford took first with 72 points, followed by No. 4 BYU (74) and No. 3 North Carolina State (142). Washington's Sabrina Monro won the individual title in the 20:26.

In the Men's Black race, No. 2 Stanford took home the team title (56 points), while No. 9 North Carolina State placed second (94) and No. 8. Northern Arizona took third (136). Alabama's David Kimani won the individual title in 24:06.

Additional ASU runners competed in the Furman Invitational races, including senior Beth Martin (97th) and junior Joanie Baca (139th) in the women's race and senior Charles Sharpe (100th), sophomore Kyle Morgan (132nd) and junior Jeremy Rasmussen (222nd) in the men's race.

The Sun Devils will take next week off in preparation for the Pac-10 Championships which they will host, Saturday, Oct. 27, at Pavilion Lakes Golf Course in Scottsdale. The men's 8,000m race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the women's 6,000m race at 11 a.m.
