Nicole Powell Named As Naismith Player Of The Year Candidate

ATLANTA, Ga. - Stanford University sophomore Nicole Powell (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe HS) is one of 30 pre-season candidates for the 2001-02 Naismith College Women's Basketball Player of the Year Award.
Powell is coming off one of the best freshman campaigns in Stanford women's basketball history. She was First Team Kodak All-District VIII and First Team All-Pac-10 last season, as well as being named a Freshman All-American and Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.
She led the Cardinal in points (14.1 pg), rebounds (8.4 pg), assists (4.7 pg) and steals (1.8 pg), and ranked among the Pac-10 leaders in seven of a possible 12 categories. She also became both the first Stanford player and first freshman to win the Pac-10 rebounding title.
The Naismith Award program, now in its 34th year, honors the outstanding college basketball players in the United States. The awards program was founded by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, an organization dedicated to recognizing the achievements of student-athletes in basketball.
