Oct. 19, 2001
EUGENE - The No. 7 Arizona Wildcats defeated the University of Oregon volleyball team 30-20, 30-21, 30-14 in front of 926 fans at McArthur Court Friday evening. Arizona improves to 12-3 overall, 7-3 Pac-10 and Oregon is 8-11, 0-9.
'I thought we did a pretty good job against a team that is ranked where they are, ' Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. 'We made some line up adjustments and had some of our younger players in there and I think our future is bright.'
In her first collegiate start, middle blocker Alisa Nelson had three kills and two blocks while freshman Lauren Westendorf had five kills and two blocks. Senior Monique Tobbagi led the way for the Ducks with 10 kills, four digs and two blocks. Junior Stephanie Martin added nine kills and three blocks, including two solo.
Oregon outblocked the Wildcats, 7-6, but Arizona had the advantage in kills (50-32), digs (36-13) and service aces (6-1).
'The bottom line is that we need to score more real points,' Ferreira said. 'Those are points that come off of kills, blocks and service aces and it's got to come in a more balanced form.'
Arizona junior Shannon Torregrosa led all attackers with 12 kills.
Oregon goes North next week, taking on Gonzaga Tuesday at 7 p.m. before returning to Pac-10 play against Washington State Friday at 7 p.m. and Washington Saturday at 7 p.m.
