OSU Women's Soccer Falls to Arizona State, 1-0

Oct. 19, 2001

TEMPE, AZ - Oregon State University's women's soccer team held Arizona State scoreless for the first 74 minutes of Friday's match, but the Sun Devils scored the only goal of the game for the win.

With the loss, the Beavers fall to 7-5-1 overall and 0-3 in Pacific-10 Conference action while Arizona State improves to 7-6-0 and 1-2 in the Pac-10. Arizona State snapped a four-game losing streak and gained its first Pac-10 win of the season.

Oregon State appeared to be in good position for the first half, but was unable to capitalize on any of several good scoring chances. The Beavers recorded three shots in the frame, while the Sun Devils were held shotless throughout the first half.

The play turned scrappier in the second half, but the Beavers still held off the aggressive Sun Devils for nearly thirty more minutes. Arizona State's Antoinette Marjanovic scored what would be the only tally of the game on a long breakaway from midfield at the 74:01 mark. Marjanovic beat OSU keeper Jo Fletcher with a shot to the lower right corner, assisted by Stephanie Peel.

Several OSU players had strong games, including midfielders Lindsey Beem, Leila Kaady, Katie Henderson, and Morgan Crabtree. Henderson, in particular, was credited by her coach with essentially shutting down one of the conference's best players in Stacey Tullock. Kaady suffered a slight injury in the second half, but is expected to play on Sunday.

'It was a very, very good college game,' said Beaver head coach Steve Fennah. Fennah was pleased with the Beavers' effort, despite the loss.

'It was a tremendous first half performance from us. We just didn't take advantage of our opportunities,' continued Fennah. 'Now we have to regroup again for Sunday and keep looking for that next win.'

Arizona State edged Oregon State in shots overall, 8-5. Crabtree led the Beavers with three shots, and Henderson contributed two more.

Oregon State continues its season at the University of Arizona on Sunday. Game-time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
