Pendleton Paces Women's Golf At Stanford
Oct. 19, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Junior Ashlei Pendleton paced the Oregon State women's golf squad with a 73 and is tied for 19th at the Stanford Intercollegiate while helping the Beavers to 12th place after 18 holes on Friday.
The field plays 18 holes Saturday before wrapping up with a final 18 on Sunday.
OSU totaled 304 at the par-72 6,154-yard Stanford Golf Course, as the Beavs played well on their first nine holes, going out in 6-over par. Birdies were tough to come by on the way in, as OSU came home in 10-over.
'We played fairly well overall,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. 'We started on the back and had a good nine, going 6-over. Then we came to the front, which normally isn't as difficult, so I kind of expected them to play better on that side.
'We have three players who haven't played this course before, but once you figure it out, it gets much better.'
Sophomore Laura Skinner backed up Pendleton's round with a solid 74 en route to a tie for 30th.
Stacie Ferguson, a junior, tallied a 78 while dealing with a difficult putting day to tie for 59th in the 17-team field.
'Ashlei and Laura played pretty well today,' Lakowske said. 'Stacie had putting troubles on some downhill putts, but it was because she was being aggressive, so you can't fault her for that. She played better than she scored.'
'Alex started out a bit shaky with a 42, but she came back and held it together, which is good,' Lakowske said. 'Kelly had a great start today, which can be a bit overwhelming for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience.
'This was a good start. They're playing without any seniors, so they're learning. The kids are in good spirits.'
