Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Match at Arizona
Oct. 19, 2001
TUCSON, Ariz. - Despite Chalise Baysa's seventh goal of the season Friday night, the University of Oregon women's soccer team lost 2-1 to Arizona.
The Ducks drop to 6-5 and 0-3-0 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats, who won their first game against Oregon in school history, improve to 4-7-1 and 1-2-0.
'Unfortunately, we came up on the short end tonight,' sixth-year Oregon coach Bill Steffen said. 'Ann (Westermark) played the game of her life, though. She played brilliantly. She sent so many good balls across, but we just couldn't put them away. Arizona battled and that's the strength of their game.'
Baysa, a senior, scored in the 16th minute from 15 yards out on an assist from goalkeeper Sarah Peters. It marked Peters' second assist this season, which has been unprecedented by an Oregon goalie.
Arizona fought back behind a goal from Liz Bartlett in the 29th minute on an assist from Candice Wilks. In the 64th minute, Wilks struck again with a goal from five yards out after Vanesha Bailey penetrated the defense and passed to Wilks.
Oregon outshot Arizona 16-15, including 11-7 in the first half. Baysa and Nicole Garbin led the Ducks with three shots each while Bartlett's five and Wilks' four led Arizona.
The Ducks next play Sunday at Arizona State at 1 p.m.
