Men's Soccer Shutout by No. 5 Stanford, 4-0
Oct. 19, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - The California men's soccer team lost to No. 5 Stanford, 4-0, in a Pac-10 conference match in front of 2,212 fans at Maloney Field Friday evening. The Cardinal improve their overall record to 10-1-0, 1-1-0 in conference play, while the Golden Bears fall to 6-5-1 and 0-2 in the Pac-10.
Stanford's Darren Fernandez scored the first goal of his collegiate career at the 27:15 mark to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead, connecting off a pass from junior Todd Dunivant. Both teams would battle for the remainder of the first half but fail to score.
Stanford erupted for three second half goals, the first coming from Dunivant at the 53:21 mark when he scored off a free kick. Five minutes later, freshman Matt Janusz fired a shot past California goalkeeper Josh Saunders for his fifth goal of the season following an assist from Fernandez.
The Cardinal capped their scoring outburst in the 66th minute when junior Roger Levesque dished the ball to junior Johanes Maliza who angled a shot past Saunders. Stanford's second half scoring came fast and furious as the three goals came within a 13-minute span.
Freshmen Mike Munoz and Troy Roberts led Cal with two shots apiece but the Bears tested Cardinal keeper Andrew Terris with just three shots on goal. Cal outshot Stanford, 8-5, in the first half but failed to register a shot in the second period.
A team known this year for its stingy defense, Cal surrendered a season-high, four goals, against the Cardinal.
The Bears face Washington Friday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. in their Pac-10 home opener. Oregon State comes into Berkeley two days later as Cal takes on the Beavers at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
