UA Soccer Nips Oregon State in Overtime, 2-1

Oct. 21, 2001

Tucson, Ariz. (Oct. 21) -- Staging another come-from-behind victory, the Arizona women's soccer team (5-7-1, 2-2-0 Pac-10) grabbed a 2-1 win from Oregon State (7-6-1, 0-4-0 Pac-10) in overtime at home on Sunday. With this weekend's sweep of the Oregon schools, the Wildcats have won back-to-back Pac-10 games for the first time in the history of the program.

The match shaped-up as a defensive battle early. Arizona freshmen Vanesha Bailey and Lindsey Peeples had two solid forays into Beaver territory during the 12th minute, but both were stifled by the OSU defense. Wildcat senior goalkeeper Shannon Monti also intercepted a number of early Oregon State crosses, negating many shot opportunities for the Beavers.

The Cats again had back-to-back shots stopped by the Beaver defense in the 26th minute, then with under five minutes remaining in the half, UA junior Tymarie Novak made a run up the left side for a clean shot from 10 yards out that was stopped by OSU goalkeeper Jo Fletcher. The teams were in a scoreless tie at halftime, although Arizona had an 8-6 edge in shots at the break.

Oregon State broke the shutout quickly in the second period, with Stephanie Lucas scoring at 47:01. Arizona had several attempts foiled in the second half, including a shot by Bailey with just under nine minutes remaining that bounced off the left post. Sophomore forward Liz Bartlett collected the rebound from that shot and fired one of her own, only to see it saved by Fletcher.

In the 82nd minute, Arizona senior midfielder Twila Kaufman sent a short back-pass in the box to freshman Cassie Daniels, who promptly tied the game with her bullet from 12 yards center. The Wildcats stepped up pressure for the remainder of regulation but were unable to finish the game.

They didn't need long into the overtime to take the victory, though. Bartlett had a breakaway just seconds into the overtime that was stopped by OSU, however the Beavers were unable to do anything about the rocket that freshman Candice Wilks sent from 20 yards out to win the game at 91:00.

Arizona out-shot Oregon State, 23-11, for the match, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on-goal. The Wildcats also set a new school record with 12 corner kicks in the game.

Sporting their best Pac-10 record since 1997, the Wildcats hit the road again next weekend to play at No. 20 Washington on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., then they play at Washington State on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 12 p.m. PST.
