WSU Tennis Heads To Stanford For ITA Regional

THIS WEEK: The Cougars women's tennis team ventures to Stanford for the Omni Hotels Western Regional Championships hosted by Stanford University. The four-day tournament features the top women's players from the ITA's western region at the NCAA Division 1 level. Participating schools for this year's event include: Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara, as well as Pac-10 foes California, Oregon, Washington and Stanford. The singles finalists and doubles champions advance to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 8-11 in Dallas, Texas.

HEAD COACH CARI GROCE ON THIS WEEKEND: 'This is what our players have played for all fall. It's a great opportunity to acquire a regional ranking (which come out in December) and even a national ranking. This regional is packed with some of the best players in the country.'

LAST TIME OUT: Washington State recorded a solid performance at the BYU Invitational Oct. 11-13. Led by sophomore Lorena Arias and freshman Chris Martinez, who combined to win a doubles title, and freshman Orsolya Sallai, who won the her singles flight, the Cougars won a tournament-best two titles.

COUGARS IN THE RANKINGS: The Cougars are anchored by Erica Perkins, a senior ranked 24th, and Stacy McKenna, a sophomore ranked 83rd nationally. Combined they form the No. 27 doubles team.
