Beavers Swept By Washington State In Volleyball Action
Oct. 25, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. - Adrian Hankoff and LaToya Harris combined for 31 kills, two more than the entire Oregon State team had, as Washington State knocked off the Beavers in three games in Pacific-10 volleyball action on Thursday night. Game scores were 30-21, 30-13, and 30-21.
The Beavers (13-6, 6-4 Pac-10) hit just .127 with just 33 kills on the night, while the Cougars (11-8, 6-6) had 53 kills and hit at a .345 mark, highlighted by Harris' 15-kills, .542 performance. Hankoff added 16 kills and hit .387 for the match.
'We just weren't very sharp tonight. There's no reason for it, and it wasn't a lack of effort,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'We kept trying to find a way, but we could not maintain the momentum. If you can't get the momentum, you can't win, especially not in the rally scoring format.'
In a rematch between the top two defensive teams in the Pac-10, WSU came out on top this time around. The Cougars outdug OSU, 56-45, becoming the first team other than Arizona to post more digs than the Beavers this season. WSU's Kali Surplus had a match-high 15 digs, while Nikki Neuburger topped OSU with 12.
The Beavers also struggled with serving and passing, allowing the Cougars to score 17 points off OSU errors in those areas. OSU had eight service errors and allowed WSU to rack up nine service aces.
Still, Somera is optimistic about her team's match against Washington on Friday.
'We not defining how we are as a team but tonight's match. We know this wasn't the way we play. We've never had two bad matches in a row, and I'm pretty confident we can bounce back against Washington,' Somera said.
