Arizona Men's Tennis Doubles Team Advances to Semifinals of ITA/So. Calif. Fall Regional Championships-

Malibu, Calif. - The Arizona men's tennis team finished the second day of competition at the ITA/Southern California Fall Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif., Friday.

In doubles action, Arizona competed in the second round with one team advancing to the quarterfinals. Sophomore Whi Kim and Tom Lloyd topped Arizona State's Olivier Charroin and Pim Van Mele, 8-4. Then in the quarterfinal round Kim and Lloyd beat UCLA's Tobias Clemens and Derrick Nguyen, 8-3. Kim and Lloyd move on to the semifinals Saturday. The Wildcats' No. 3 seeded team, senior Steven Capriati and sophomore Carl Hagman, fell to Jonathan Endrikat and Brian Morton of UC Irvine, 8-5. Sophomore Roeland Bratianu and freshman Colin O'Grady fell to the No. 1 seeded team of Marcin Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA, 8-4.

On the singles side both Wildcat players lost in the third round. Capriati, the No. 8 seed, fell to Marcin Matkowski of UCLA in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 and Hagman lost to the No. 2 seeded Jean-Julian Rojer of UCLA, 6-2, 6-4.

Wildcat players who lost in the second round Thursday competed in the second round consolation singles Friday. O'Grady beat Martijn Olthoff of UC Santa Barbara, 6-4, retired. Senior Bruno Arapovic finished Derek Betyar of UC Riverside in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6. Bratianu cruised by Carl Lumsden of UC Irvine, 6-3, 6-4. Two Wildcats fell in the consolation round, Lloyd lost to Jason Pongsrikul of San Diego, 6-4, 7-6 and Kim lost to UCLA's Lassi Ketola, 6-2, 5-7, (11-9).

Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on the Pepperdine campus is the site for this weekend's Championships. The four-day tournament begins Oct. 25 and continues through the championship matches on Oct. 28.

The tournament includes a 64-player singles and 32-team doubles draw and features players from 11 schools--Arizona, Arizona State, Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, San Diego, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and USC.

The Arizona men's tennis team next travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, Nov. 20, to take on the University of Hawaii.
