King Advances to Round of 32 at ITA Regionals
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- University of Oregon men's tennis sophomore Chris King won his first and second round matches at the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Santa Clara University. Greg Dubourdieu also won his first round singles match, and the doubles tandem of Chris King and Johan Paalberg won in the first round of doubles competition, as the Ducks looked strong during day one of the four day tournament.
'We've obviously made progress from the San Diego tournament to this tournament. Were moving in the right direction,' said Oregon coach Chris Russell.
King defeated Josh Farley of St. Mary's 6-0, 6-1 in his first round match, and Dubourdieu defeated Rick Ruso of host Santa Clara 7-6 (5), 6-4. In the second round, King upset seventeenth-seeded Chase Exon of California 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, while Dubourdieu faced third-seeded Balazs Vereso of California, and lost 6-2, 6-0. In the doubles competition, the King/Paalberg duo was victorious by a score of 8-3 over Patrick Brialld and Kevin Patrick of California, and Kyle Halberg and Greg Dubourdieu were defeated by Santa Clara's tandem of Federico Mattioli and Ben Hidalgo.
'Chris is continuing to play outstanding tennis,' sixth-year Oregon coach Chris Russell said. 'He's currently on a seven match winning streak for singles dating to today'
The ITA Championships continue through the weekend, and conclude on Monday.
