Sun Devils Slip Up Cougar Soccer 2-1
Oct. 26, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. --- The Washington State women's soccer team jumped on Arizona State early Friday afternoon, but could not hold on as Stacey Tullock recorded an assist and scored a late goal to give the Sun Devils a 2-1 victory.
Just 2:58 into the match, WSU junior Katrina Stroh knocked in a goal on a wild play, rebounding a shot by freshman Meghan Cecchini and sliding the ball by ASU goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald. Cecchini and Beth Childs were both credited with an assist.
The Cougars controlled the run of play in the first half, outshooting the Sun Devils eight to four, and taking six corner kicks compared to only one for ASU, but were unable to put the match out of reach.
'I thought we dominated the first 34 minutes. We did a good job defensively and had some chances to break it open, but were just unable to do so,' head coach Dan Tobias said.
Arizona State tied the game at the 34:16 mark on a header from the top of the box by Kathleen Dely. Tullock provided the assist off of a free kick.
Washington State took 10 more shots in the second stanza, including four on goal, but could not convert. That set the stage for Tullock's game-winning goal in the 74th minute.
The Sun Devils took the lead off of another free kick, this time Antoinette Marjanovic passing to a streaking Tullock, who shot just past the outstretched arms of Cougar goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen.
'They scored on two free kicks. Dead balls are always dangerous and the scouting report on this team was that they were very good on dead balls,' Tobias said. 'The margin of error in this conference is very slim. It was unfortunate.'
The Cougars received five shots from Stroh and three each from Liz Duncan and Meghan Cecchini.
The loss dropped WSU's overall record to 6-6-0, 1-3-0 in Pac-10 play. Arizona State advanced to 8-7-0, 2-3-0 in-conference.
'That loss definitely hurts us,' Tobias said. 'It put us in a position where we need to really respond on Sunday. It stings, but we have to recover quickly and concentrate on Sunday.'
Washington State plays Arizona Sunday at noon.
