Wildcat Soccer Edged by 16th-Ranked Washington, 2-0
Oct. 26, 2001
Seattle, Wash. (Oct. 26) -- Battling chilly temperatures, constant rain and extremely slippery conditions, the Arizona women's soccer team (5-8-1, 2-3-0 Pac-10) was edged by 16th-ranked Washington, 2-0, in Seattle on Friday night. The Huskies moved to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in Pac-10 play.
The first half was relatively even, but with 31 seconds to play until halftime, Washington's Gina Brewer took a 25-yard shot that hit the crossbar and bounced down to the goal line. Wildcat senior goalkeeper Shannon Monti collected the ball and was preparing to punt it when the linesman signalled that the ball had crossed the goal line. With a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard, Washington held only an 8-6 edge in shots at the break.
The Huskies controlled the second half with several close chances, but Arizona's defense kept them off the scoreboard for the majority of the period. UW managed only one more goal, in the 74th minute, despite owning a 13-7 lead in shots for the half.
Monti made at least four diving saves during the second half, denying certain goals, and ended up with 10 saves for the match, her second double-digit save total of the season. Washington finished the game with a 21-13 shot advantage, but the Cats had the 4-3 edge in corner kicks, proving that they were able to get under the Husky defense.
Wildcat freshman forward Cassie Daniels collected a team-high four shots, and sophomore forward Liz Bartlett had three shots, including two on-goal. Another freshman, Candice Wilks registered three shots, with one on-goal, while junior defender Naomi Chu had the team's other shot on-goal. Freshman midfielder Vanesha Bailey and sophomore defender Meaghan McNatt contributed one shot apiece.
Arizona remains in the Pacific Northwest this weekend, playing its final Pac-10 road game at Washington State on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 12 p.m. PST. The Cats return home next weekend to open a season-ending three-game homestand.
