Huskies Halt Sun Devils With Last-Minute Field Goal

TEMPE, Ariz. - John Anderson kicked a 30-yard field goal as timeexpired as No. 13 Washington rallied for yet another comeback victory, beatingArizona State 33-31 on Saturday night.

Willie Hurst ran for 185 yards for Washington (6-1, 4-1 Pac-10), which hasmade five successful fourth-quarter comebacks this season to match its 2000total.

The Huskies trailed 31-30 when they started the winning drive from their own10 with 7:12 left. Anderson lined up for a 28-yard attempt with 51 seconds lefton fourth down, but Arizona State jumped offsides, giving Washington a firstdown.

Washington worked down the clock to 3 seconds before Anderson lined up forthe winning kick.

Cody Pickett passed for 252 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies. JeffKrohn threw for 320 yards and two touchdown passes for Arizona State (1-3,4-3).

Washington opened the scoring on its second possession. The Huskies drove 54yards in seven plays - all passes - with the final 3 coming on Pickett's passto Todd Elstrom.

The Huskies made it 14-0 2:51 into the second quarter. Reggie Williamscapped a six-play, 71-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Pickett.

On the first play of the next series, Krohn mishandled the snap andWashington recovered the fumble at the Arizona State 19. Four plays later,Anderson kicked a 31-yard field to make it 17-0.

Arizona State got on the scoreboard at 7:37 of the second quarter when Krohnhit Mike Pinkard with a 23-yard touchdown pass. Anthony Kelley's interceptionset up the Huskies' next score, which came on a 2-yard run by Pickett. The SunDevils got a 42-yard field goal from Mike Barth with 7 seconds left in thesecond quarter and Washington led 24-10 at halftime.

Tom Pace ran 3 yards for an Arizona State touchdown 4:39 into the thirdquarter to make it 24-17. On the Huskies' next possession, Donnie O'Nealblocked a punt and punter Derek McLaughlin kicked the free ball out of the endzone for a safety. Arizona State then took the free kick and went 50 yards insix plays, with Krohn connecting with Shaun McDonald on a 33-yard pass thatgiving Arizona State its first lead at 25-24.

Washington came back with Willie Hurst's 3-yard touchdown run on the lastplay of the third quarter to go back up 30-25. Arizona State regained the lead31-30 on a 1-yard Delvon Flowers touchdown run with 12:59 left.
