One other Husky is still competing. Sophomore Erin Hoe won two matches Saturday to move into the consolation singles bracket round of 16. She defeated Reese Galido of Cal Poly 6-2, 6-1 before a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Portland's Cheryl Holub.
Stanford senior Gabriela Lastra was the only one of the top four singles seeds remaining after day two of the regional championships. Lastra, who is the second seed in the 128-player draw, posted two convincing wins on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal senior defeated Marta Gronowicz of Sacramento State 6-1, 6-0 in the third round and Lucia Tallo of Fresno State 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, top-seeded Kim Niggemeyer of Fresno State was eliminated in the third round and both third-seeded Claire Carter of Washington and fourth-seeded Erica Perkins of Washington State were knocked out in the fourth round. Niggemeyer fell to Susanne Bertel of Pacific 6-4, 7-6 (4), Carter was defeated by ninth-seeded Stacy McKenna of Washington State 7-6 (5), 6-3 and Perkins fell to ninth-seeded Darija Klaic of Washington 6-2, 6-4.
The doubles bracket was a different story, as each of the four top seeds advanced to the semifinals with a pair of victories. Top-seeded Simone Jardim and Niggemeyer of Fresno State will play fourth-seeded Carla Arguelles and Raquel Kops-Jones in one semi, while second-seeded Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette of Stanford will face third-seeded Carter and Klaic of Washington.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event, which is administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), will earn spots in the November 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
The four-day tournament, which takes place Friday through Monday, Oct. 26-29, features the top women's players from schools in the West region that compete at the NCAA Division I level. Participating schools include Pacific-10 Conference members California, Oregon, Stanford and Washington State along with Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara.
All of the regional and championship events are using an experimental game scoring system called 'Collegiate Game Scoring.' Also known as One Ad scoring, this system is a scoring method similar to No Ad scoring, but considered less radical. CGS allows one deuce if the score goes to 3-3 (or 40-40). The game is won by reaching four points with at least a margin of two points, or a score of either 5-3 or 5-4.
