Jewel Peterson To Compete For ITA Regional Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Junior Jewel Peterson moved into the title match with a semifinal victory over teammate Luana Magnani on Sunday, Oct. 28, at the 2001 Omni Hotels ITA Southwest Regional Championship at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
With three Women of Troy competing in two semifinal matches, USC was assured a spot in the finals. Second-seeded Peterson, who won the title in 2000, earned the spot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Magnani. On the other side of the bracket, junior Maureen Diaz fell to top-seed Sara Walker of UCLA 6-2, 7-5. Peterson and Walker will compete for the championship title on Monday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m.
In doubles play, all three USC teams were eliminated on Sunday after quarterfinal and semifinal matches. The duo of Peterson and Tiffany Brymer was the only USC representative in the semifinal round after defeating Pepperdine's Alexis Kujawska and Charlotte Vernaz 8-4. UCLA's Walker and Petya Marinova then defeated the tandem with a 9-8 (4) tiebreaker.
Anita Loyola and Magnani fell to Marinova and Walker 8-5 in the quarterfinals. USC's Bernadette Bayani and Diaz were also defeated in the quarterfinal round, 9-7 (7), by UCLA's Megan Bradley and Lauren Fisher.
