Washington Swimming Coasts To Team Titles At The Clan Cup

Oct. 28, 2001

SEATTLE - The Washington men's and women's swimming teams dominated the six-team field, cruising to both team titles at the Clan Cup in Burnaby, B.C., October 27-28. The Huskies combined to outscore second place Simon Fraser by over 600 points (864-212), in the UW's first away meet of the season.

The Husky women, who defeated runner-up Simon Fraser, 439-93, were led by juniors Julie Massey (Tacoma, Wash.) and Kim Harada (San Lorenzo, Calif.), as well as freshmen Hannah Jo (Federal Way, Wash.), Desiree Johnson (Post Falls, Idaho) and Anissa Hilyard (Whittier, Calif.). Massey won the 50 and 100-meter breaststroke, while taking second in the 200 breaststroke and the 50-meter butterfly. Jo, meanwhile, recorded an NCAA B qualifying time in the 400 individual medley with a first-place time of 4:55.34, and also won the 200 IM and the 400 freestyle.

On the men's side, the Huskies outdistanced second place Simon Fraser, 425-119. Individually, four Huskies were among the top five swimmers, including sophomores Justin Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.), Luke Ekhoff (Portland, Ore.) and Jesse Nitz (Puyallup, Wash.), and freshman Jim Wolfe (Hillsboro, Ore.). Adrian claimed first-place finishes in the 50 and 100-meter butterfly, while Ekhoff was first in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke. Nitz, meanwhile, finished one spot short of the sweep in the breaststroke events, taking first in the 50 and 100 breaststroke, before coming in just behind Ekhoff in the 200-meter race.

Both Washington swimming teams will be back in action next weekend for the Big West Shootout, Feb. 2-3, in Irvine, Calif.
