Oct. 29, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - Cardinal freshman Erin Burdette defeated senior teammate Gabriela Lastra 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 earlier Monday morning to claim the singles title at the Omni Hotels Northwest Regional Singles Championship at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Burdette, ranked No. 93 in the national preseason rankings, had also beat senior teammate Keiko Tokuda earlier in the quarterfinals to advance.
Burdette, seeded ninth in the tournament, also competed in the doubles final with sophomore teammate Lauren Barnikow. The No. 16-ranked Cardinal duo dropped an 8-6 decision to Fresno State's Kim Niggemeyer and Simone Jardim, ending their strong tournament run. Two weeks ago at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Burdette and Barnikow fell to Niggemeyer and Jardim by the same 8-6 score in the quarterfinals.
Erin Hoe of Washington defeated Washington State's Chris Martinez 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation singles final. There was no consolation doubles draw.
Stanford now looks ahead to the ITA National Indoor Championships in Farmers Branch, Tex., on Nov.8-11.
