Huskies to Honor Weller on 20th Anniversary of The Wave

Oct. 29, 2001

Washington alum Robb Weller will be recognized Sat., Nov. 3 between the first and second quarters of the Washington-Stanford football game for introducing 'The Wave' to college football.

Weller will lead the Husky Stadium crowd in a rendition of the famous cheer, which was introduced to college football in Husky Stadium on Oct. 31, 1981. The event marks the 20th anniversary of that first performance, inspired by Weller and band director Bill Bissell.

Weller, a former cheerleader who had returned for homecoming, teamed with Bissell to instruct the crowd to start in one section and make a human wave that rolled around Husky Stadium. The original Wave saw Husky fans remain standing until a full circle was completed.

The original Wave is believed to have started in the third quarter of the Huskies' game with Stanford, as Washington scored 28 consecutive points en route to a 42-31 win over John Elway and the Cardinal.
