Oct. 29, 2001
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Stanford University junior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy) captured the Omni Hotels Northern California Regional Singles Championship with a straight set win over teammate Ryan Haviland (Sumter, SC/Sumter HS) on Monday morning at Santa Clara University.
The fifth-seeded and 57th-ranked Lipsky beat the fourth-seeded and 48th-ranked Haviland 6-2, 6-3 to become the Cardinal's fifth straight Northern California Regional Singles Champion. The Cardinal's K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) won the title last year in Berkeley, and was proceeded by Alex Kim in 1999, Hippensteel in 1998 and Mike Bryan in 1997.
Haviland also advanced to the doubles finals with freshman Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks HS) after posting an 8-5 semifinal win over Santa Clara's Chris Lam and Rick Ruso on Monday morning. The fourth-seeded Cardinal duo then dropped an 8-5 decision in the finals to top-seeded Peter Malacek and Travis Parrott of Portland.
The singles and doubles champions from this event, which is administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), will earn spots in the November 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas. Lipsky will be joined at the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships by Hippensteel, who locked up a berth by winning the singles title at the ITA All-American Championships earlier this month.
