WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA's Shannon Torregrosa has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for October 22 - 28, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Torregrosa, a junior from San Diego, Calif., played a key role in Arizona's sweeps over third-ranked USC and sixth-ranked UCLA this past weekend. She posted 35 kills on 67 attempts while committing only seven errors (.418). She also chipped in with 12 digs and six total blocks as the Wildcats swept the Los Angeles schools at home for the first time since 1993. Her two match effort improved her season hitting percentage 33 points.
Against the Trojans, Torregrosa finished the 3-0 sweep with 19 kills on 37 attempts and four errors (.405). In doing so, she accounted for 34 percent of Arizona's points in the match, tallying 22.5 of UA's 67 points. In the win over the Bruins a night later, she set a new career mark for attack proficiency, recording a match-high-tying 16 kills on 30 swings and only three errors for a .433 hitting percentage. Torregrosa also came up with seven digs and two block assists in that match.
It was the first weekly honor in Torregrosa's career, Arizona's 16th honor all-time.
